Of Computers and Games and Not-quite-wild Roses

I ordered a new computer yesterday afternoon…tralalaaaa!

After mentioning how much trouble I was having with mine a few weeks ago, I really hadn’t said much more, but the problems have never gone away. They got better after I did a lot of tweaking - uninstalling some programs, updating others, changing some settings, running adware scans and purges, defragging the hard drive…you get the picture. And still there are problems, the most obvious of which is that I can no longer play ANY sort of video clip on here (like YouTube for instance) without everything freezing up and crashing.

So I’ve been carefully avoiding video for weeks, although I still have been ambushed a few times by visiting a site that ends up having a video ad. Yep, that crashes it too. And now and then it’ll just freeze and crash for no apparent reason. When that happens, sometimes it’ll come back up with a DOS screen telling me it can’t load Windows and that I need to go back to my last good settings. If I tell it to do that, sometimes is works, but other times not so much. On the not so much times, the only thing I’ve found that works is to turn off the CPU and walk away for an hour or so while it cools off, and eventually I can usually get it to restart properly. Can you say “frustrating and inconvenient??”

I know I talked about wiping the hard drive and reloading everything, but this computer is several years old (I was looking for some paperwork yesterday to determine exactly how old, but haven’t found it yet), and it has been the least-reliable system I’ve had even back when it was brand new. It’s loud, it gets hotter than it should even with the fans running constantly, it’s crashing right and left, and in the end I decided that it was time to stop messing around with it and start over.

So now I’m waiting for FedEx to arrive sometime next week, with a box that I hope will contain a gem instead of a lemon. I detest the thought of cleaning up all the crappola they load onto new systems and I dread the thought of transferring files and things from this computer to a new one, but I really look forward to the idea of having a system that works properly again. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Meanwhile, I want to play a game again! I’ve had so much fun playing Scattergories the last two weeks and having so many of you play along, and I just KEEP thinking of new categories. So I’m making this a Saturdays-in-June game and posting more today and next week. (This is actually a 5-Saturday month, but I don’t know if I’ll do a fifth week or not. We’ll see.)

Rules are same as before - each answer has to start with the same letter as the first letter of your name and if an answer is a place name it should be real, not fictional. If someone who answers before you has the same first letter, try to come up with different answers than they did. Now on to…

If you want to play, either leave your answers in comments here, or post them on your own blog and leave a comment telling me you did so I can go check them out!

Here’s today’s Daily Art Thang, a rose that looks nearly-wild, but is actually a hyprid called “Escapade.” I grew this rose at our last house where I had a rose garden with over 100 bushes. This was one of just a handful that I dug up and brought with me. Many of them didn’t make it, but this one did and is still one of my favorites.
